For property crime in 2024 in Missouri:
Larceny-theft comprised ~67.3 % of property crimes
Total violent crime (“crimes against persons”) in Columbia declined by -3.5 % from 2023 to 2024.
However, murder increased sharply, from 7 in 2023 to 13 in 2024 (an 85.7 % increase).
The clearance rate for homicide is high (12 of 13 in 2024), but the absolute number is low, so small changes produce big percentage swings.

Other context from news / CPD commentary:
CPD reported that for 2024 homicides, arrests were made in each case and referred for prosecution.
In CPD’s public statements, Chief Schlude said the audit revealed discrepancies in prior numbers and thus 2023 Use of Force and crime data were revised.
Before year-end 2024, as of Dec. 29, Columbia had recorded 569 violent crimes (for the calendar year to that point).
Among weapons used in violent crime, firearms are the most frequent.
2025 (So Far) — Early Indications & Limitations
Because 2025 is underway and full-year data is not yet consolidated or published, below are early signals and constraints:
The new crime data dashboard launched in August 2025 will over time provide more granular data for 2025 (by date, location, type).
City press releases indicate ongoing investigations into homicides, armed robberies, assaults during 2025.
Some media reports in late 2024 / early 2025 observed that violent crime had been increasing (in certain months) compared to prior years, with rises in murder, aggravated assault, sexual assault, and robbery.
In 2023, the sheriff’s office had reported 87 violent crimes.
Note: “violent crime” here includes murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and rape (as defined by the reporting agency).
In the same report, it is noted that of those 76 violent crimes in 2024, 52 % involved firearms or “dangerous weapons.”
The report also clarifies that Columbia’s violent crime is not included in the sheriff’s office numbers, because Columbia has its own police jurisdiction.
For example, Columbia recorded 569 violent crimes in 2024 (versus 514 in 2023).
In 2024, Boone County’s “outside-Columbia” portion recorded 2 homicides; the sheriff’s office has not had more than 3 murders in a year recently.
A YouTube video (KMIZ / local news) also reports that Boone County’s sheriff says violent crime is declining while Columbia’s city numbers are trending upward (i.e. divergence between city vs. unincorporated county) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6hYJ006vGI
From local / regional planning / historical sources
The Columbia / Boone County Community Health Assessment (2023) contains historical data on violent crime counts in Boone County over a span of years (though it does not have the 2024–2025 detailed breakdown).
According to the site BestPlaces, Boone County has a violent crime rate of -18.5 per 1,000 (or per 100,000 depending on units) and a property crime rate of -32.9 (again, depending on the unit).
